Red Baron

100 years ago died in action Freiherr Manfred Albrecht von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), also known as the "Red Baron". He was a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I and he officially credited with 80 air combat victories with his red plane. On 21 April 1918 Richthofen received a fatal wound while flying near the Somme River, France. During the exchange of fire, Richthofen was struck by a bullet and died after crash-landing in a field.
